How to Keep Your A/C in Great Shape All Summer

summer-ac-tips

Summer is the time for fun and relaxation! But not if your home’s air conditioning system goes out. Here’s how to stop that from happening:

Tip #1: Change your air filter.

Changing your A/C’s air filters can be tedious and time-consuming, but it will definitely help keep your A/C running smoothly throughout the summer months. Dirty or clogged filters are often to blame for malfunctions with compressors that lead to breakdowns or slowdowns in a system. The last thing you want is an A/C problem caused by something that’s easily preventable with a simple reminder on your calendar or phone!

Tip #2: Clean your A/C coils.

Like filters, coils can also get pretty dirty over time and need to be cleaned periodically for optimal performance. A dirty coil will not only reduce efficiency but may actually increase energy consumption as well! If you don’t feel comfortable trying this yourself, you can always give H.A. Sun a call and take advantage of our professional coil cleaning services!

Tip #3: Check your thermostat.

An improperly calibrated or misaligned thermostat can lead to a higher-than-needed cooling capacity, meaning you could be spending extra money on unnecessary energy costs. If you’re not sure exactly how to do this, here’s how: tape a thermometer on the wall next to your thermostat, then wait 10-15 minutes and check both devices. An accurate thermostat should, of course, match the thermometer! Otherwise you’ve got a faulty thermostat that will no doubt strain and impede the function of your A/C.

Tip #4: Check your air ducts.

An air duct that is clogged with dust (or worse!) will not be able to supply the A/C unit with cool, clean air. This can lead to a higher-than-necessary cooling capacity, or even an overload of your system. Similarly, leaky air ducts reduce your A/C’s ability to circulate cool air around your home, and cause the unit to work harder. An easy way for you to check for air duct leaks is simply, as you may have guessed, place your hand on the duct metal where the sections connect, and ensure you don’t feel air blowing on your hand.

Tip #5: Get an A/C tune-up.

No matter your A/C’s age, a tune-up is a great way to avoid issues with your system down the road! It may seem like another big hassle at first, but it will save you time and money in the long run. Not to mention make your house more comfortable for everyone during these hot summer months! Some people think an A/C tune-up isn’t necessary, but a technician checks many parts and inspects thoroughly so that a tune-up is more than worthwhile. They check electrical components, refrigerant levels, leaking air handler seals, condensate drains and drip pans … and even your furnace! (Despite the fact that it’s summer.)
