Bloomfield Hills business owner gives employees incentive to lose weight
H.A. Sun Heating & Cooling employees Charolette Salo and Jeff Klueger are pictured after their company-wide “Biggest Loser” weigh-in.
When Oklahoma City was named one of the fattest cities in America, Mayor Mick Cornett challenged residents to lose weight as a city — and, as a result, they lost a combined one million pounds.
Henry Abrams, owner of H.A. Sun Heating & Cooling in Bloomfield Hills, has announced a similar challenge for Oakland County businesses.
“My goal and end result on a larger scale would be to lower insurance premiums by having people losing weight and being more conscious of what they’re eating,” Abrams said.
Abrams is hosting an eight-week contest within his own company based on the NBC show “The Biggest Loser.” Nineteen of Sun Heating’s 50 employees have signed up to lose a collective 400 pounds.
The group collectively weighed in at 4,260.9 pounds at the beginning of the contest last month.
The first-place winner will receive $500 and the second place winner will receive $250. Employees will be judged based on percent of body weight lost, not total number of pounds.
The current first-place winner at the fifth weigh-in is Roberta Gorevitz. Second place is Eric McMullen and third place is Charlotte Salo. Abrams said the first-place winner has, so far, lost 10 percent of her body weight. As of last week, the group collectively lost 120 pounds.
Abrams is also giving one dollar for each pound lost to each employee.
“A lot of people are at their goal, beyond their goal and a couple people are complaining that Super Bowl screwed them up the first week and Valentine’s Day screwed them up another week,” said Abrams.

Abrams and co-owner Fred LaBelle have contributed healthy snacks to those employees taking part in the “Biggest Loser” contest, offering an encouraging atmosphere.
Abrams said he got the idea to have this staff-wide contest because “in the beginning of the year, a couple guys came to me and all they were doing was complaining about wanting to lose weight.”
So, he said he wanted to help his employees lose the weight they wanted. And this idea was born.
Abrams said the positive energy is evident at each weigh-in. Employees scrambled to see their individual ranking when the group results were posted by weight gain/loss percentage.
“It’s really taken on a lot more fun, healthier, productive and positive energy than I expected it to,” said Abrams.
Recently, Center for Yoga provided each participating employee with a gift certificate for one month free unlimited membership. In addition, Dave Saterstad and David Paull of Medical Weight Loss Clinic in Southfield offered to partner with the Sun Heating contest and offered each participant a gift certificate for four weeks of a Medical Weight Loss Clinic program.
