Why Are Allergies So Bad This Year?

2022 summer allergies

Why are allergies so bad this year? Blame it on the weather. Warm temperatures and dry air cause pollen to proliferate, and that can trigger sniffles, sneezes, and watery eyes for people with allergies.

This summer has been a really hot one, I think we can all agree! The heat and dryness have caused pollen levels to skyrocket. And for people with allergies, that means more sneezing, sniffling and watery eyes.

But you might be wondering, why would pollen thrive in such swelteringly hot, dry conditions? Well, when it’s hot, and especially when it gets hotter earlier on in the year, that actually leads to the highest pollen production. And dryness also leads to more pollen, because wet, rainy weather helps cut down on the amount of pollen in the air … so, when we don’t have that, the pollen just builds up.

You might also be thinking, “Here in Oakland County, it’s not dry, though. It’s humid!” And, relative to other places in the U.S., you’d be right! But this year is a drier year for the Detroit area than in the past!

August 2020: Avg. low daily humidity 67%, Avg. high daily humidity 91%

August 2021: Avg. low daily humidity 45%, Avg. high daily humidity 71%

August 2022: Avg. low daily humidity 39%, Avg. high daily humidity 81%

Yep, this year is hotter and drier, which unfortunately means more allergies for many of us. So, what can you do to try to combat the sniffles this season?

Here are a few tips:

  • Stay inside as much as possible, especially on days when the pollen count is high. Avoid being outside during the early morning hours when pollen levels are at their highest.
  • Keep your windows and doors closed.
  • Shower and wash your hair after you’ve been outside to remove pollen from your skin and hair.
  • Take your allergy medication!
  • When it comes to pets, try to keep them indoors as much as possible, and wipe them down with a damp cloth when they come in from outside.
  • Use an air purifier in your home.

We recommend the Infinity® air purifier because it uses what it calls “Captures & Kills” technology, which traps 95% or more particles 1-4 microns in size and neutralizes them in an electric field.

Right now when you purchase a New Carrier Cooling & Heating System with Infinity® air purifier you will save up to $2050! So, if you’re in the market for a new system, now’s the time to act, and help ease your allergies in the process!
