How to Prepare Your Home for Fall

Michigan home in fall

Are you and your home ready for fall? If your answer to that question starts with “uhh …”, then H.A. Sun is here to help!

We’ve made a list of the three main things you should do this September, so you and your HVAC system can “chill” as the temperature drops.

1. Check / change your air filter

We know that many people try to keep the same filter for six months or more, hoping to save a few bucks! But this is not a good gamble. In reality, trying to save money by getting the most “mileage” out of your air filter is harmful for many reasons. For one, as your filter becomes less effective, and your home’s air quality decreases, you and your family will experience fall allergies or other respiratory problems worsen! Also, a dirty, clogged filter causes your system to work harder to pull air through the inefficient filter. An over-worked system means higher utility bills … and in extreme cases, a system breakdown! So, as you can see, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to changing the air filter. Changing the filter every six months is fine … for an unoccupied vacation home. For most homes, without pets, you can go three months per filter. But if there are pets in the home, or if anyone suffers from allergies, then the filter should be changed every month!

2. Do a furnace test run

Does your furnace work? Is it ready for the cooler fall temps? Again, if your answer to that question starts with “uhh …”, then you need to test your heating system. Furnace burners and blowers may need maintenance before the cold season sets in. But there’s more to testing your furnace that simply turning it on – you should also inspect your furnace. For example, a crack in the heat exchanger means carbon monoxide could leak out of the furnace. Or, is your furnace turning on and off again quickly, cycling every few minutes? This problem could happen if your furnace is too big for your home.

So, it’s not enough to turn on your furnace and say, “it works!” You also need to visually inspect the furnace, and also let it run for a while to ensure there are no irregularities.

3. Schedule maintenance

Even if you’ve already changed the air filter and tested your furnace to prepare for fall, it may still be a good idea to let us inspect your system! If there’s anything wrong with your furnace, A/C, or any other component of your HVAC system like the ductwork, we’re here for you!
